Manjushri in Mexico

A One-Month Retreat
Supervised by Venerable Thubten Chodron

    Dec. 4, 2000 - Jan. 3, 2001

Manjushri, the 'ever-youthful', is the Buddha of wisdom, the special deity of Lama Tsong Khapa, and our guide to understanding the profound reality of emptiness. One purpose of this retreat is to develop a very close, intense connection with Manjushri, which helps us to develop the four wisdoms: the quick, profound, vast and clear. The vast wisdom understands the meaning of extensive scriptures, the clear understands the subtle details of difficult points, the quick rapidly cuts wrong conception and doubt, and the profound understands the meaning of teachings in limitless ways.

The benefit of doing serious retreat cannot be overstated. Such concentrated, continuous meditation rapidly matures one's practice and has a deep effect upon the mind. There is no other experience in life quite like it.

The retreat is not suitable for those who are new to Tibetan Buddhism although retreatants need not be particularly familiar with the Manjushri practice. You should have some prior retreat experience (for example, one of Venerable Chodron's weeklong Lam Rim retreats.) You should understand what visualization/deity practice is and should be able to lead yourself through a practice (for example, Chenresig or Vajrasattva.) Talk to the retreat manager if you have doubts or need a little encouragement! The retreat will be held in silence. There will be 6 meditation sessions each day, some led by group members, some self- led. Venerable Chodron will give a special teaching once a week.
